The only thing still recognizable of New Jersey of 1968 may be its borders. 

The last 50 years have starkly reshaped the landscape of the Garden State, from its sardine-packed Gold Coast to the white sands of Cape May. We analyzed decades of Census data to show the myriad ways New Jersey has evolved.  

What emerges is a portrait of a society that's constantly shifting and potentially foreshadows the challenges of the years ahead. The graphics below detail seven of the most dramatic shifts, which are fundamentality shaping who we are as a state.

Packed like sardines

This likely isn't news to most residents, but it's important. New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the nation, packing more than 1,200 people per square mile of space. This colors not only how development proceeds, but could also have impacts on how growth occurs. 

The Great Slowdown

After experiencing nearly exponential growth from the 1790s through 1970, New Jersey has been adding fewer and fewer new residents. As New Jersey is outpaced by other states around the country, its Congressional delegation has suffered.

Growth has slowed to a near halt over the last decade or so, which could imperil one of the state's 12 seats in Congress after the 2020 Census.

Vested Land Services LLC - about underwater properties and their mortgages

Ah, “deregulation for the sake of competition. Bad days ahead for telephone customers?

This Star-Ledger story caught my eye because it affects me. Well, it affects everyone in New Jersey who doesn’t use cellular service to obtain residential telephone service.

According the S-L,

“Most of the state’s regulation of basic cable and land line telephone service would come to an end under a controversial bill that passed the state Assembly on Thursday.

“Supporters of the "Market Competition and Consumer Choice Act" (A3766) say it removes outdated rules that go back to the era of Ma Bell.

“But Stefanie Brand, the state ratepayer advocate, said in a letter to lawmakers that it would leave New Jersey residents "at the mercy of cable and telephone companies."

“And local officials are complaining it allows Verizon to go back on pledges it made to towns in exchange for getting a statewide franchise in 2006 so that it would not have to negotiate town-by-town to offer its FiOS service.”

What’s the fuss?

“Currently, companies offering basic telephone and land line services have to get the okay from the Board of Public Utilities before they can raise rates. The bill, which passed 66-7 with four abstentions, would eliminate that oversight.”

“It would also roll back rules requiring cable companies to give credits to customers whose service is out for more than four hours, correct billing errors and protect customers from "slamming," in which their telephone company for local or long distance service is switched without their permission.”

Now you know we are in trouble when a bill sponsor says,

"This is a competition bill," said Assembly Majority Leader Joseph Cryan (D-Union), a sponsor. "The telecommunications industry is one of the industries we can point to where deregulation actually works."

N.J. foreclosures coming to a court ordered halt?

Hot off the wire, New Jersey's Supreme Court is threatening to halt foreclosures by six lenders for "irregularities."

According to NJ.com, the state's chief justice writes that the court

"has become increasingly concerned about the accuracy and reliability of documents submitted to the Office of Foreclosure."

A special master could be appointed to review the foreclosure practices of companies including Wells Fargo, JP Morgan Chase and Citibank.

Of course, nothing is said of the substance of the "irregularities" or about the underlying fact that the loans are in default. More to follow.
